Hi there,
Welcome to Think Less Thursday. Here’s your thought for the week.
Thought for the week
There’s no one reading this who doesn’t have a LOL Goal.
It’s that thing you’d secretly love to do, but barely believe it possible.
Take a six-month sabbatical and write a novel. LOL.
Retire early and do dry-stone walling in the Dales. LOL.
Get promoted from ‘Head of’ to CEO in three years. LOL.
Move to Italy and live in a house with a view of the mountains and the sea. LOL.
Quit your well-paying corporate job and launch a business that tackles the climate crisis. LOL.
Swim a mile in open water. LOL.
It’s a LOL Goal™ because it’s so scary and exciting it makes you laugh out loud.
You know you’ve discovered yours when you think: ‘God, I would love to do that… but there’s no way… no chance… am I even allowed to want that? … I can’t believe I said it out loud … and yet, it would be amazing… maybe one day…”
When you get that feeling or an image in your mind of you doing the thing, trust it.
This is the thing to go all-in on. This is the thing that finally breaks the overthinking loop.
It’s a way to turn an anxiety spiral - that keeps you feeling stuck and small -into a possibility spiral, which builds confidence and turns ideas into action.
Sometimes the hardest step is simply allowing yourself to dream.
What’s my LOL goal?
Glad you asked!
It’s to perform at Glastonbury - to run an Overthinkers Anonymous or LOL Goals session at the world’s biggest music festival.
I have this clear picture in my mind. It’s June 2027. I’m booked to run a session on the Saturday from 2-3pm. It’s in the mental health or well-being or ‘create an idea that changes the world’ tent. (Not sure if any of these exist, but I’m confident they’ll be something like this at Glasto.) I’m at the festival in a blue and white camper van with Alice, my partner. My daughter is in her second year at uni by then, and she’s also there with a group of her mates.
Let me be clear - this is definitely a LOL goal for me. Right now, I have no idea how I’m making this happen. I don’t know Emily Eavis’s mate’s sister’s cousin or anything.
I do have experience running Overthinkers Anonymous sessions, of course. And a background in stand up comedy. I reckon I could do a talk that’s entertaining and genuinely useful for the 20 or so people who stumble into that tent at 2pm on Saturday afternoon.
When I told Alice about it, she said, ‘that’s hilarious - I so want it to come true.’
Watch this space - LOL.
